Winter is officially near, and the changing temperatures mean it’s time to hide away summer’s seasonal clothes and other linens until next year. Take some of the following tips to store clothing and bedding safely to prevent household pests from infesting your home and making a meal of your favorite attire. Many are surprised to learn that adult moths do not actually chew holes in clothing – it’s their larvae that do! Adult moths will lay eggs on clothes and and when the eggs hatch into small worms, there are enough of them to destroy any piece of clothing.
Before you store clothing, sort and donate items that you have not worn in the past year. After collecting the items that will be stored for the following season, launder all pieces even if they appear to be clean! Moths and other pests are attracted to food and perspiration stains more than they are attracted to fabric. Also, be sure to dry fabric completely before storing. If damp whatsoever, moisture will develop into mildew which will attract insects.
While your closet is a little less full, clean it thoroughly by removing all dust and dirt. Look for signs of mold or mildew and disinfect as needed, as well as inspect the closet for any existing pest infestation. For the stored clothing, be sure to choose a location that is cool, dry, and well-ventilated. This may mean avoiding certain attic and basement spaces. Also, be careful when selecting the storage solutions for your clothing and bed linens. Vacuum-sealed storage bags not only take up the least space, but they also guarantee pest-free storage. If you are going to be boxing up your items, try avoiding cardboard boxes if possible as they attract insects. It is best to invest in plastic storage tubs with tight fitting lids.
